WHAT TIME DID YOU SAY IT WAS?

There are gales; during the day there have been heavy downpours interspersed with cold showers of rain; there has been hail. During the week we are to expect light snow falls. Tonight, our clocks move forward by one hour to welcome in British Summer Time......

I'm off to bed to get my beauty sleep, and hopefully have the energy tomorrow morning to embrace our wonderful new Summer season.

'British summertime' has always seemed a strange expression to me and looking out the window, it's not the least bit summery out there yet!

Wishful thinking even encouraged me to move the clocks, that needed manual attention, to be moved back an hour, instead of springing them forward.

Spring might settle upon us in due course....

We're more likely to see snow at Easter than Christmas so I'm not surprised at the weather! Flighty xx

Hello MR F.

After such a long cold and fairly hard Winter, people here were hoping for the merest movement out of it. There again, hope spring eternal!

Hi Zewt,

Changing seasons can be wonderful, they can be unexpected.

I miss the old times, when I knew that end of March will mean end of winter and end of September will mean end of summer. But that was in the 80s, 90s. Recently everything is pretty unstable and random and I feel that in most parts of Europe, there are no four seasons any more, there's many seasons and you can't really know, if it'll snow for a month, rain for a month or be very hot for a month. I really miss the good old days. Or was the weather always like that and I didn't really perceive that as a child?

Hi MKL

You raise interesting perspectives. Since I have lived where I am now, it's been an experience of two to three seasons. Some years it has clearly felt like two with cold and in-between. It has been difficult to get used to. Older people here say Summers of times gone by, were hotter, they emphasise it by explaining that the tar on the roads used to melt; I guess then, it must have been so.

When I was young, growing up in London UK, (the sunny South)we had four defined seasons, not always good, but they were definite. I do remember a number of very hot Summers as a child, with regular Indian Summers, sometimes nearly a month of very pleasant weather, in very late Autumn, (October time). That set us up for the Winters, which could definitely be very cold by comparison to the warmer seasons, though never as cold as some of the Arctic temperatures we had where I am, this year.
