A MIXED BAG

Today has been a mixed bag of doings, mostly at the computer, once the essential domestic chores were done. I've got washing blowing on the line, and it is not very warm out there. My cropped trousers and short-sleeved blouse may metamorphose into heavier clothing before I put my nose outside the door again today.

Hubby has been out fishing and as I write, is probably preparing and fileting fish on the home made work area in the garden. You pay a high price in the shops for fish; at one time, a beef steak was the bees knees, and you paid a premium price for it. Today fish is a similar or higher price, even where we live, close to the sea shores. The Spanish load up fish, velvet crabs, and other shell fish on their refrigerated lorries nearly every week, then drive off to the Mediterranean with the North Atlantic harvest.

I hear that relatives are ministering to their pretty 14 year old pet cat; it sounds like the last rites are being given. I'll go and visit before the family go to see the vet. Bye for now.

Weather is still sunny and warm here, ZACL.

Don't rub it in! Actually, yes do, I need some of that warmth. :)

ZACL, Your day sounds relaxing. I don't really fish, but today the thought of being on a boat and later eating fresh fish is calling to me.

I haven't been out in the boat. I can see why it would appeal to you Rebb, you're having extremely hot weather where you are.

We ate fresh fish last night. Relatives have benefitted from today's catch.

The poor cat really has gone downhill and it wasn't at all interested in anything. It did purr ever so quietly when I stroked its head, to say goodbye.

Hi PP,

I hope it all works. Look forward to seeing you here. xx

ZACL,

I envy people who can fish easily, but thinking of fileting fish, blood, and chopped heads, I better not. That's hard and courageous work.

Condolence to your relatives' cat. For cats, 14 years must be good though.

ZACL,

San Francisco is pretty cold, but Southern California is warm most of a year.

Hello Keiko,

Thanks for the condolences. The cat has been buried under a lovely small evergreen bush that catches the sun, when there's some about. 14 years is quite a good age for a pedigree cat, I believe. My own one died when she was 18 years.

I have seen the catching and fileting of the fish, both the initial exercise on the small open boat, whatever the state of the tide, and the final flourishes here at home. I don't do it, note, I just watch!

Re your mention of San Francisco. Keiko; I don't know what type of cold it would be there in Summer. The USA this year, has had extreme heat. 40 degrees Centigrade and more. The Jet Stream has been in an unusual position, creating the odd weather patterns we have had, in reverse, cool, very wet, and cold.

I much prefer fish to steak, and there is a good fresh fish shop just down the road from me where I treat myself now and again.
It's always sad when a pet dies. I remember all ours with fondness. Flighty xx

Have you any idea where your fresh fish shop takes its deliveries from? It can't be easy for such a business these days.

It's a small member of the family dying when a pet goes, isn't it, Mr F.

I think that they go to Billingsgate Market.
It sure is, and it's something that always got to me when it happened. Flighty xx

Billingsgate Market makes for a very early start to a day, to get the best fish for selling on.

A programme I once saw, showed vehicles from the East coast ports delivering to the Market, though I am sure the market would take fish from further afield too, say, Whitby.
