I've been tossing and turning vague ideas about, for posts, like a storm in a tea cup, which, as yet, has not settled. My thoughts are taken up with the tragedies of war and the awfulness of the wrath of nature, which, like war, wreaks havoc on communities and countries.
'Community' and 'country' are compound shorthand terms, which, seem to me to be useful third party non-emotive descriptions for talking about people like you and me. Communities are made up of people; like the men women and children, who have provided the life blood of the places that have been destroyed. Many of the people who have lived in those places have been destroyed too.

Life is full of upheaval and cruelty. In these times we have come to expect fair play, and citizen’s rights… and a lot of other things that are not recognized by nature. And now and then our bubble bursts, and we realize that we are only a very small part of the universe around us. Have you read the wonderful story by Mark Twain, called the Mysterious Stranger?
Yes, Shimon, you have caught the thread and added to it very well indeed.
I will place the Mark Twain book on 'books I must read'. Thank you for the suggestion.
Such heartrending events remind us that any ideas we may have of being in control are foolish fantasies. Time we learned in macro to work with and respect Nature, rather than against her.
I think that the time of year doesn't help either.

I think I understand what you mean about working with Nature rather than against, GillyK. Somehow, though, I do not think any amount of work with Nature would have truly alleviated the scale of the structural and human calamity in The Phillipines.
From my safe haven, I can only think that a mass evacuation could have helped preserve lives; in a poorly managed country it did not happen.

One thing I am not affected by, (yet) is SAD syndrome, which is what I think you were referring to for the time of year. I am very unhappy by the impotence I feel in the face of the suffering of all those people and children. I was making a crie de coeur.

It is difficult to take in the scale of destruction here, and I fear many more extreme weather systems will strike around the world.Nature will never be tamed but as you say the response could be better and preventative action taken, everyone knew that storm was coming but the poor are always left to cope alone.xxxx
