FILES, FOLDERS, I.T. HISTORY AND BEAUTIFUL BIRDS

Deciding  to file one piece of paper this morning, led to a massive filtering of a folder and a clear-out of its contents.  The folder had been straining and had just begun separating from its metal hanger. I then got sidetracked into looking at the contents of another folder.

I reckon I found a bit of I.T history in the second folder.  I Took out a very chunky 220 pages multilingual white book.  It had a red apple  logo on it with a bite out of the apple.  All that for a little iPod care plan;  it was an early nano, so, not as little as the current ones, which are just a bit larger than some postage stamps.  Generally, you don't get books with I.T. kit now.  The book is destined for paper recycling, unless anyone has other ideas!

Interrupting my focus on the task in hand, the doorbell rang.

When I opened the door, I did not expect to see hubby standing there, nor with one hand outstretched.  In his slightly cupped hand was a perfect beautiful Green Finch, alas, very dead....  such a pity.  We can only surmise that it had flown into something, a window, perhaps. It was found lying between the lengths of two cars, unseen by predators.

I returned to my filing task with a lot less enthusiasm. However, with a finishing flourish, I installed two new hanging folders into the filing cabinet, one to replace the failing one and another for my one piece of paper, the one that started the whole tidying performance.

It's fatal to start tidying files and folders! It soon takes you down Memory Lane and before you know it, the day is gone. But you do feel very virtuous afterwards...

Hi Jennyta,

I actually found some useful data. Now, if I have problems with my Gmail account, I can quote chapter, verse and reactivation code.

Memory lane did come into it, you are so right. I reckon I might be feeling nearer heaven when I have tackled a couple of other overstuffed folders I have been ignoring for far too long.

At some point, a little more than ten years ago, I think, I started filing my files digitally. It meant scanning files, but they take up a lot less space, and are much easier to find these days. But information that came with instruments and tools are still kept in boxes... sorry to hear about the discovery of the dead bird. That was a sad note...

Very satisfying to have replaced a folder and emptied two files - all except that one piece of paper. Most impressive. That should do you now for another 6 months at least ;)

Being a bit of a minimalist I keep as few files and folders as possible.
Shame about the Greenfinch. Flighty xx

Oh I wish......GillyK.

I'm not sure how much more time, or how many folders will need my tender care. I am happy to say, those done this week are not the first this year!

Your intentions were very much mine, Mr F. There are so many things that crop up where you did have to have and keep the original paperwork for 10 years;that's reduced to 8 years - a two year improvement! There were many more areas of ones life where you had to keep records. Original paperwork is still required for some administrative transactions.

It is sad about the Finch. It was small and very beautiful. xx

Digital filing is very useful for finding what you seek a little easier, Shimon, depending on the filing pattern you employ.

However, there some cases where digital filing is not possible, original documents may be required by Government agencies, for example, not digital copies.

If I.T. services go down, which does happen from time-to-time, access to alternative information backup is necessary. Fortunately, There is a slight reduction in the need for original paperwork, another reason for clearing out my folders and files.

Thanks for your comment, Shimon.

How sad about the little green finch, I was just in the garden listening to a pair singing.
I'm smiling at the thought of a folder with one piece of paper in it. Clearing and sorting is always so satisfying, once you've finished that is.xxx

The folder started with one piece of paper in it, Snowbird, but not for long, as there were a couple of other items that should not have been where they were. The were married up with the one piece of paper. This tidied up another element of my files. Just a few more (not sure how many) to go.

After paper sorting, I shall have to deal with the digital files I have. I look forward, sometime, to my computer HDD breezing along with some freed up space.
